How haemodialysis works

Haemodialysis (HD) is a medical treatment that uses a dialysis machine to clean your blood, and is necessary for people in kidney failure. During each session, the machine gently draws blood from your body, passes it through a special filter (called a dialyser) to remove waste, extra fluid, and salts, and then returns the cleaned blood back to you.

Each treatment usually lasts about four hours and is ideally completed three times a week, allowing your body to maintain a safe balance of fluids and minerals between sessions.

Why is high-quality dialysis important?

High-quality dialysis makes a big difference for your health and well-being. Patients who receive regular, high-quality dialysis not only feel better day to day but also live longer, healthier lives.

Symptoms of inadequate dialysis can include: tiredness or weakness, nausea or poor appetite, loss of body weight, trouble sleeping, swelling (ankles, feet, hands), and shortness of breath.

What other services are provided in each AHN session?

Anemia management — monitoring and treatment with EPO and IV iron as needed.

Regular monitoring and lab tests — including Kt/V, potassium, phosphorus, and haemoglobin.

Kidney-friendly meals — supporting your nutrition needs during treatment.

Specialist nephrology support — our clinical teams are on hand throughout your treatment.
